Most Coronavirus patients initially experience mild or moderate symptoms. Most of the mild symptoms can be treated at home and will recover within a few weeks.
However, it is estimated that one in five patients develop symptoms that are more severe and worrisome and therefore require special treatment at the hospital. COVID-19 patients who experience severe symptoms should also use a ventilator as a breathing aid.

Then, about anything that triggers symptoms of mild coronavirus can become severe? The following are reported by The Sun.

1. Age and health condition
Experts call having comorbidities or comorbidities to be a determining factor in the condition of coronavirus patients can be severe or not. This is because individuals with concomitant diseases have a weaker immune system so they are unable to fight COVID-19.

"If the immune system is not strong, it is very likely that the virus can multiply in the lungs and cause inflammation and scarring. The immune system will fight it and destroy healthy lung tissue in the process," said Dr. Sarah Jarvis GP, Clinical Director Patient Access.

However, age is not always the trigger that turns the coronavirus into a deadly disease. Some elderly people aged 50 years and over can also recover from COVID-19.

2. When the virus has passed through the windpipe
COVID-19 is commonly found in droplets and enters the body through the mucosa of the eyes, nose, and mouth and then stays long in the throat. When development can be stopped in the throat, it is likely that the patient will recover and only experience a mild condition with symptoms of dry cough and fever and can be treated at home.

But if the virus gets through the throat and enters the lung tissue, the disease will enter a more alarming phase. Symptoms experienced include chest pain, coughing, and shortness of breath. This virus can also attack the alveoli or air pockets and fill it with fluid causing pneumonia.

Most who die of COVID-19 are patients with severe pneumonia. Additional oxygen and ventilators are usually used for pneumonia patients, but sometimes the damage is too heavy.

3. The response of the immune system
In most cases, the body's immune system can directly fight and kill the coronavirus successfully. When the virus appears, the body tries to immediately repair the damage in the lungs. If it goes well, the infection can be eradicated within a few days.

Unfortunately, there are several conditions where the body's immunity can be more dangerous and cause loss of follicles which helps repel contamination. In addition, there is also a cytokine storm syndrome that occurs when the body overdrive in an effort to fight the virus. When cytokine storms occur, the immunity that should attack the virus actually attacks the body back.

Younger and fitter people with a strong immune system are actually more likely to experience cytokine storm episodes than the elderly. So yes, parents and young people are equally vulnerable to coronavirus infection.
