A researcher and director of the Center for Radiology Research at Columbia University, David Brenner, said that certain types of light can kill viruses in the air. Some of the viruses in question one of them is the Coronavirus.
Brenner has learned that ultraviolet or UV rays have the potential to fight the spread of the virus. UV rays are known for their properties that can kill germs and are used to sterilize equipment, to hospital areas.
"Exposure to these rays in particular UVC is safe for humans because it cannot pass through living cells in our body," he was quoted as saying by ABC News.
"After running a number of additional tests on UVC or far rays, we see that even low doses can kill 99 percent of the virus," continued Brenner.
Brenner's team previously tested the UVC against two seasonal Coronaviruses, and are currently testing it with the COVID-19 virus, SARS-CoV-2. Lights that use UVC rays are also being produced and are awaiting approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Although still awaiting approval and licensing from the FDA, public demand for these lamps is very high. This makes the company that manufactures it, Cy Herring, have to work all the time.
